Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine went live on October 6, 2026, bringing a new Support hero, a ground-up Roadhog rework, Sombra’s reclassification from Damage to Support, a new Escort map, and a four-week Halloween event. The update, which Blizzard published in its retail patch notes, is the largest single patch of the Reign of Talon narrative year and touches every role in the roster.
Doctrine: The 54th Hero

Doctrine is a Support built around what Blizzard describes as a vampire fantasy. His primary fire, the Eternal Scepter, damages enemies and heals allies simultaneously at long range. Invigorating Drones extend healing and attack speed to nearby teammates. His ultimate, Deliverance, redistributes lifeforce—granting allies Overhealth while capping nearby enemies’ maximum health.
Blizzard nerfed Doctrine between his September Hero Trial and launch. His ultimate now costs 8% more charge. The Invigorating Drones attack-speed buff dropped from 35% to 30%. Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown rose from 7 to 8 seconds, and its damage reduction fell from 50% to 40%. Deliverance’s Overhealth and debuff duration was cut from 8 to 6 seconds. The pattern is familiar: trial-period heroes tend to look oppressive in short bursts, then arrive tuned down. Whether Doctrine still dominates early ranked lobbies will become clear within a few days.
Roadhog Gets Trash Compactor
Roadhog’s old secondary fire is gone. In its place is Trash Compactor, a 2-second projectile-absorption ability that fires back an explosive projectile dealing 75–200 damage depending on distance. The explosion has a 2-meter inner radius, 6-meter outer radius, 30% damage falloff, and a 30% conversion rate from absorbed projectiles. Roadhog moves 15% slower while channeling, and the ability carries a 10-second cooldown in 5v5.
His primary fire now fires two bursts per volley. Ammo increased from 6 to 12, and total damage per volley rose from 175 to 204. Blizzard stated in the patch notes that the rework had two goals: reduce the frustration Chain Hook creates for most heroes, and give Roadhog a tool to aid his team as a more traditional Tank would. Whether Trash Compactor achieves the second goal without making Roadhog a projectile-vacuum that negates entire team compositions remains to be seen.
Sombra Moves to Support
Sombra has been reclassified from Damage to Support, shifting from the Recon subrole to Tactician. Hack is gone entirely. In its place she gains two new abilities. Hotfix provides 65 instant healing plus 25 per second, with 2 charges, an 8-second cooldown, and 17-meter range. Cyberspace drops a 5-meter zone that deals 25 damage per second to enemies and heals allies for 30 per second over 3 seconds. Enemies caught in the zone receive a new Weaken status that reduces their damage and healing output by 50%.
Her Translocator stealth duration increased from 5 to 6.5 seconds. A new passive, Conspirator, reveals fully charged enemy ultimates. Blizzard’s developer comment in the patch notes acknowledged the tension that prompted the move: Sombra’s identity as a disruptive mastermind was at odds with the value a Damage hero was expected to bring. Moving her to Support lets the team lean into that fantasy without the Damage-role expectations. For Sombra mains, this is effectively a new hero wearing the same skin.
Map, Event, and Competitive Changes
Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is a new Escort map set inside a converted Overwatch watchpoint turned Helix-controlled prison, built into an Icelandic volcanic fissure. It is the location where Doctrine was held before the season’s opening cinematic.
The Halloween event, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, runs from October 6 to November 2. It introduces a 5v5 Open Queue arcade mode with a guaranteed 1-2-2 role composition and Best-of-3 Control format. Dying grants Power Choices at Common, Epic, or Legendary rarity. Players also gain 10% Ultimate Charge on death and respawn with Overhealth equal to 40% of max life plus 30% movement speed while out of combat.
On the competitive side, two changes deserve attention. The Top 500 Challenger leaderboard now sorts by Rank instead of Challenger Score by default, and the Heat Bonus—which rewarded extra games played—has been removed. Blizzard stated the change is intended to reward the most skilled players with less focus on play time. For players grinding Top 500, this means volume no longer compensates for a lower peak rating.
Global hitscan projectile sizes were also reduced. Large hitscan went from 0.07 to 0.04 meters; small hitscan from 0.04 to 0.02 meters. Blizzard noted this is to maintain a similar level of effectiveness after hit volume smoothing changes. In practice, expect a subtle but real adjustment period for anyone who relies on hitscan heroes at higher ranks.
Other balance changes include D.Va’s Micro Missiles fire rate increasing from 11 to 14 shots per second, Genji’s Swift Strike damage rising from 50 to 60 while Dragonblade damage drops from 110 to 100, Bastion’s Reconfigure duration shortening from 6 to 5 seconds, and Lúcio’s Sound Barrier duration extending from 5 to 6 seconds. Cassidy’s High Noon will now detach him from Lifeline’s tether and drop him to the ground—a targeted fix for what had become a dominant repositioning tool.
A limited-time collaboration with Shadow Monarch (Solo Leveling) runs from October 6 to October 19, featuring skins for Reinhardt, Reaper, Genji, Anran, and Lifeweaver. Unvaulted Battle Passes from Legacy Seasons 1–15 can now be purchased and progressed alongside the current season’s pass, though only one Unvaulted Pass can be active at a time.
What This Means for Ranked
Sombra players need to relearn their hero from scratch. Hack is gone, and the new kit plays like a zone-control Support rather than a backline assassin. Roadhog players gain a defensive tool that rewards positioning over raw hook accuracy, but the movement penalty during Trash Compactor means mistiming it is punishing. Cassidy players lose the Jetpack Cat tether repositioning that made High Noon oppressive in coordinated play. The hitscan projectile size reduction will affect aim feel across the board—expect a few days of adjustment. And if you were grinding Top 500 through volume, the Heat Bonus removal means peak performance now matters more than match count.
