Blizzard Entertainment confirmed during BlizzCon 2026 that Sombra and Roadhog will receive comprehensive gameplay reworks in Overwatch Season 5. The updates, set to launch alongside the new hero Doctrine, aim to address long-standing community frustrations regarding Sombra’s stealth mechanics and Roadhog’s lethal combo potential. Most notably, Sombra is shifting roles entirely, moving from a Recon Damage hero to a Tactician Support character.
Sombra’s Transition to Support

The repositioning of Sombra marks the most significant mechanical change to her kit since her introduction. No longer reliant on stealth for pure damage output, Sombra will function as a utility-focused Support. Her primary ability, Hack, is being replaced by Hotfix. This new ability heals allies and hacks health packs and enemy deployables, shifting her focus from denying resources to managing team health and map control.
Her Virus ability is also undergoing a structural change. It is being reworked into Cyberspace, which creates an area-of-effect zone. This zone simultaneously weakens enemies and heals allies, forcing opponents to either abandon their position or suffer significant debuffs. Two new perks further define this role: one applies Hotfix immediately after using her Ultimate, while another doubles her healing output on enemies already affected by Cyberspace.
Roadhog’s Defensive Overhaul
Roadhog receives a new ability called Trash Compactor. This tool allows him to absorb enemy projectiles and return them in an explosive blast, providing a dedicated defensive layer for the tank role. The ability addresses criticisms of his previous lack of tools to counter high-damage projectile heroes without relying solely on positioning or cooldown abuse.
His offensive pressure is being reconfigured through perk changes. The Scrap Hook perk has been buffed to reload four ammo upon landing a hook, up from the previous two. This change speeds up his sustain and aggressive potential. Conversely, the Shrapnel Launcher perk is being removed and replaced with Here, Piggy, Piggy. This new perk drastically reduces the cooldown of Scrap Hook while his Ultimate, Whole Hog, is active, encouraging a more aggressive combo window during his ultimate uptime.
Trash Compactor also introduces its own Major Perk, Toxic Exhaust, which slows and damages enemies while the ability is active. This ensures the new defensive tool retains some offensive utility, preventing it from becoming purely passive.
Context and Precedent
These changes are not unprecedented in Overwatch’s history. Role shifts have occurred before, most notably when Doomfist was moved from Damage to Tank following the Overwatch 2 relaunch. Blizzard’s stated goal with these reworks is to mitigate the “hook and one-hit-kill” combo that defined Roadhog’s meta presence for years, while reducing Sombra’s ban rate, which has historically been high due to her disruptive stealth and hacking capabilities.
What This Means for Ranked Players
For competitive players, Season 5 demands a relearning of both heroes. Sombra players must pivot from a damage-centric mindset to a support mentality. Success will no longer hinge on getting behind the line for a quick elimination, but on utilizing Hotfix and Cyberspace to manage team health and disrupt enemy cooldowns. Positioning becomes even more critical, as her ability to sustain herself in the backline is now tied to her support utility rather than stealth escapes.
Roadhog players gain a new layer of decision-making with Trash Compactor. The ability provides a direct counter to projectile-heavy compositions, but the removal of Shrapnel Launcher means the old combo of hooking a target into a shotgun blast is less guaranteed. The new Here, Piggy, Piggy perk suggests a playstyle that capitalizes on the chaos of Whole Hog, using reduced hook cooldowns to chain crowd control during the ultimate. Players accustomed to the old Roadhog loop will need to adapt their timing and aim to fit the new defensive and offensive cadence.
